Netball fever is returning to the Gold Coast in 2014, with over 200 teams from around Australia and New Zealand set to take on the fourth annual NetFest event from 16-19 October.
More than just a netball tournament, NetFest is Netball Australia’s mass participation event for female and mixed teams of players aged 18 and over. Teams can choose from the traditional outdoor competition format, or the increasingly popular beach netball competition played on custom-built courts on the sands of Surfers Paradise. The on-court action will be supported by a program of social events overseen by NetFest Ambassador Liz Ellis that includes the official opening, a celebrity beach netball match and the NetFest Saturday night party.
“I’m just so excited to be returning to the Gold Coast for NetFest 2014”, Ellis said. “NetFest is all about doing what you love - playing netball, meeting new people, catching up with old mates and just having a ball on the Gold Coast. “It’s always a fun weekend and everyone walks around with smiles on their faces.“There’s lots of social events going on and it’s chance for people to have a bit of an end-of-season trip, do some socialising and meet some other players not only from around Australia but around the world. “The Gold Coast has something for everyone. When you’re not playing netball there’s always something to do.”
NetFest has rapidly established itself as one of the most popular events on the netball calendar. From just 500 participants in its first year, NetFest participation more than doubled in 2012, and then attracted a whopping 1,757 netballers across the beach and outdoor competitions in 2013.
This year will see a record number of teams and participants take part across the beach and outdoor competitions. Last year 35 teams competed on the sand while the outdoor competition attracted 168 teams comprising nine competitive, six social and two mixed divisions
All teams play a round robin tournament over Friday and Saturday, with the top four in each division progressing to the Sunday finals. This year’s off-court action will again feature NetFest’s penultimate night on Saturday, the NetFest Party.
Early Bird tickets are available from 24 May.
