SCODY announces partnership with Triathlon Australia

SCODY is proud to announce today the signing of a 3-year deal with Triathlon Australia to be TA's official partner for uniforms and clothing to the Australian Triathlon Team.

The new partnership will give Australia’s world class elite and age group triathletes all the benefits of cutting edge technology as they prepare for the 2012 ITU World Championships in Auckland, the 2013 ITU World Championships in London and the 2014 ITU World Championships.

The following is an excerpt from the official TA press release today:

SCODY will provide outfitting, including the latest in its performance racing wear for Australia’s elite racing team, the Under 23s, Juniors and all Age Group representatives at the ITU World Championship grand finals.

In other major benefits SCODY will:

  • Continue research and development both independently and in conjunction with Triathlon Australia and relevant research institutions to ensure the best technologies are integrated into its race garments.
  • Become the official naming rights sponsor to the SCODY ITU Junior Australian Triathlon Series.
  • Provide official TA outfitting for each member of the Australian Age Group team selected for sprint distance, Olympic distance, Long Distance and Duathlon ITU World Championships in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and in a major coup;
  • Provide 3x$25 vouchers to each Triathlon Australia annual member for 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Triathlon Australia’s CEO Anne Gripper said TA was excited about the partnership, a three-year- arrangement “with a locally based manufacturer who had already worked to develop the best possible performance triathlon suits.”

“I know SCODY has worked closely with our own elite athlete Brad Kahlefeldt to develop their suits for all conditions and they are determined to achieve absolute perfection for every individual,” said Ms Gripper.

“What we are equally excited about are the benefits for our age group representatives, with the provision of an Australian polo shirt and shorts to every member of the Australian Age Group teams at the ITU Age Group World Championships.

“Our team in Auckland later this year for the ITU World Championship Grand Final will look absolutely amazing I’m sure.

“And in what is a real bonus, every TA member also receives $75 worth of SCODY gear which I know our members will be very happy about.”

SCODY managing director Bernard Schreiber said his Burleigh Heads-based company was proud to be “an Australian manufacturer making Australian suits for Australia’s elite athletes.”

“To partner with Triathlon Australia and the Australian team is a very proud partnership for us. Everyone at SCODY is very excited with the arrangement and we know we can make a difference,” Mr Schreiber said.

“To see the bottle green and gold suits rolling off our production line straight into the hands of some of the world’s best athletes is very satisfying for us.

“It is even more satisfying in the morning when you look out the window and see a group of riders going past all decked out in your gear.

“We work very closely with Brad Kahlefeldt to develop our suits in an ever changing technological world and we pride ourselves in being on the cutting edge of technology right here in our own factory on the Gold Coast.

“The benefits for us are the ability to clothe all Australian triathletes and to position ourselves as the leading Triathlon apparel brand.

“We can now do some genuine research that will benefit all Australian athletes with suits that will help them perform better.

“Our motto is that athletes who look good and feel good in their suits will perform at their best.”

Tips for travelling with bikes

Holidaying with a bike is one of the best ways to experience new places. However, travelling with a bike can also be a recipe for disaster. Not packing your bike properly, unexpected excess baggage charges, and finding that your bike has been damaged in transit are top of every athlete's list of travel gripes. Here are our tips for getting you (and your bike) to your destination with a smile:

1. Hard case, soft case or bike box?

Everyone is different on this. Whichever option suits you best depends on your budget, type of travel and your transport at the other end. As a guide, hard cases are more expensive, weigh more and can be cumbersome to negotiate in comparison with a soft bike bag. However, they are generally more reliable for keeping your steed safe from impact damage and over-enthusiastic baggage handlers - particularly for overseas travel when you have multiple connections.

Hard cases - strong but costly

Soft cases (or bike bags) are good for domestic travel. They tend to be lighter and easier to carry (usually with a shoulder strap or wheels) compared with hard cases. The downside is that they are not as protective as hard cases. Usually some cheap foam padding from the hardware store and a few 'fragile' stickers will do the trick for domestic travel.

Soft case

Bike boxes are the cheapest of the lot. You can usually pick up a cardboard bike box from your local bike store for free, and they are roomy and easy to pack. Just cross your fingers for dry weather or you'll be carrying all your parts and some soggy bits of cardboard at your destination! A good alternative is a hard plastic collapsible box (like this one) which is light and sturdy. The AIS use these plastic boxes for their cycling teams. The main disadvantage of these boxes are that they are huge and a pain to lug around.

Cheap and cheery cardboard

2. Travelling by plane and excess baggage

Airlines are getting tighter and tighter with their baggage restrictions. The best way we have found so far to avoid paying excess baggage charges is to book your trip through Healthwise Active Travel (part of Flight Centre). They have a special deal going with Qantas that lets you take your bike for free whenever you book a domestic flight through them.

Otherwise, here is a summary of airlines' domestic charges for travelling with a bike:

  • Virgin Blue: Checkin luggage is an extra cost but gets you 23kg INCLUDING your bike. Excess above that is charged at $15/kg.
  • Qantas: Included allowance is 23kg including bike. Excess baggage is charged per piece - $20 if pre-paid or $30 at the airport
  • Tiger: $35 per bike
  • Jetstar: Luggage must be pre-purchased (which gets you 20kg). Any extra weight is $15/kg.

3. How to pack your bike

Packing a bike is a life skill that is hard the first time but super easy after that! Here's a checklist for you. You will need a pedal spanner and a multitool with allen keys.

  1. Remove your pedals with a pedal spanner or allen key (remember the thread is reversed on the non-drive side)
  2. Take off your handlebars (sometimes you can just twist them if your box is big enough)
  3. Take out your seat post
  4. Take out the wheels and skewers (you will find it easiest to remove your back wheel when your chain is in the smallest rear cog)

Remember to use plenty of padding - a safe bet is to assume that whomever handles your bike in transit cares a lot less about your bike than you do.

Happy travelling!

ANZ Netball Championship announces 2012 season draw

Press release from Netball Australia:

The world’s best netball league, the ANZ Championship, returns for its fifth season in March 2012. The season opener will see 2010 champions, the Adelaide Thunderbirds, host the NSW Swifts at Netball SA Stadium on Saturday 31 March.

All ten teams will contest Round 1, with other matches to be played in Auckland, Brisbane, Invercargill and Perth.

In 2012, the competition reverts to its standard 17 week format, comprising 14 regular rounds and the three week Finals Series.

All matches will be played on Saturdays, Sundays or Mondays. As in previous years, Australian and New Zealand teams will play the four other teams from their respective countries twice, and each team from the across the Tasman once.

Matches will be played in 17 different venues, including two newly opened venues for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic – Claudelands Arena in Hamilton, and Tauranga’s TECT Arena. Next season also sees the return of the ANZ Championship to Newcastle (Swifts v Fever, Round 8) and Napier (Pulse v Steel, Round 2).

The 2012 season includes two completely trans-Tasman rounds (Rounds 6 and 14). Fans will have to wait until almost mid-way through the season for the 2011 Grand Final re-match, when reigning Champions, the Queensland Firebirds, take on number one New Zealand side, the LG Mystics.

The 2012 Grand Final will be held on Sunday 22 or Monday 23 July.

ANZ Championship General Manager Anthony Everard said, “With the 2011 season finishing almost two months earlier than usual, we are in the midst of an extended off-season.

“However, there has certainly been no lack of action off the court; we have been watching with great interest during the current athlete contracting period.

“In our four seasons to date, seven of the competition’s ten teams have contested finals netball”, he continued.

“With some key player movement between teams, there’s every reason to expect that 2012 will throw up as many surprises as we’ve seen in previous years”.

Although teams have until 31 October to name their final squads of 12, there have been several key signings announced in recent weeks – including moves for joint 2011 MVP winner Leana de Bruin (Steel to Magic); 2008 premiership players Cath Cox (Swifts to Fever) and Rebecca Bulley (Swifts to Thunderbirds); and 2009 premiership player Renae Hallinan (Vixens to Thunderbirds).

Five of the competition’s ten teams have appointed new head coaches: NSW Swifts – Lisa Beehag, West Coast Fever – Norma Plummer, Haier Pulse – Robyn Broughton, Mercury Energy Tactix – Leigh Gibbs, and Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel – Natalie Avellino and Janine Southby.

Final team lists will be announced in early November; in the meantime, fans can keep track of key signings via the athlete tracker on www-anz-championship.com.

The 2012 ANZ Championship will once again be broadcast on SKY Sport in New Zealand, and Network Ten (TEN and ONE) in Australia.

SCODY athletes headline a big weekend

Photo: www.challengecopenhagen.com

SCODY athletes have notched up some impressive results this weekend! To start with, Tim Berkel won his third Ironman-distance event yesterday when he defended his 2010 title at Challenge Copenhagen (becoming the youngest 3-time IM champion ever!).

Melissa Rollison also took out the Steelhead 70.3. Bad conditions saw the swim leg cancelled which made the race extra tough, but Melissa showed why she is the next big thing in long-course triathlon with a winning marging of almost 4 minutes.

In Olympic distance triathlon, Felicity Sheedy-Ryan finished 4th in the Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup in Hungary.

And Matty White raced strongly to come a very close second by six seconds yesterday at 2011 IM 70.3 Yepoon.

In cycling news, the second round of the SCODY Cup,  the Tour of Geelong, wrapped up yesterday with Genesys Wealth Advisers' Nathan Haas taking out overall honours over Ballarat's Patrick Shaw and Western Australian Anthony Giacioppo.
