Donostia Sprint Triathlon 12/06/11

Whilst in Vitoria, I have the opportunity to do some of the local Basque
races. This weekend I drove to San Sebastian which is just over an hour from
Vitoria. There are races almost every weekend in the Basque country and
they are great practise and training and also offer good prize money.
The 750m swim started on the very scenic San Sebastian beach. I
swam away from the other girls straight away, however I went slightly off
course... There were 4 buoys in the water but you actually only had to follow
2. I guess my Spanish isn’t good enough to work that out at the briefing!
I had a large lead going onto the bike and I rode pretty hard the whole
way. I was lucky enough to have closed roads and 4 police motor bikes
around me to show me the course which was very cool!

I already had a few minutes gap between myself and the next female
however I wanted to try and recreate a real race situation so started the run
fairly hard. It was 2 laps out and back along the esplanade and the
atmosphere was crazy. There were spectators along the whole course and
they were really loud!

I ran quite hard the whole way and was happy with how I felt. I won by
around 10 minutes, although I have yet to see the actual results. The
organisers looked after us really well and I still can’t believe how enthusiastic
all the spectators were! It was awesome.

Next weekend I am doing another local race in Lekeitio which I’m
looking forward to. I’ll be in touch to let you know how it goes!

Hasta luego,
Charlotte
