Mitchell Robins: Weihai ITU Premium Asian Cup

Good morning to all,

Finally, some good news to report on. I really turned things around between my less-then-average race in Japan and my last race in Weihai, China Saturday. The 6 days in between were spent doing some light training and everything I could to recover, and seeing a little of the tourist hub of Weihai. I was unsure of how things were going to shape up after my sub-par performance the week before, but I started the race confident and aggressive and it got better from there.

The swim was in a protected bay, with a beach start and 14degree water which meant a wetsuit swim. I got a good start and lead the first 750m lap round the beach, then jumped onto a Canadian guys feet and sat comfortably in 2nd spot the rest of the 2nd 750m lap. 4 of us exited the water together and had a nice gap to the rest of the field. I was already super happy as the guys I got out of the water with are great swimmers and beat me by 1:40min in the swim just the week before in Japan. We were joined at about 10km into the ride by a Russian and South African athlete, and the 6 of us rode about 7mins into the next group, so we had a pretty handy lead onto the run. It was getting really hot by this stage, and the run was just so hard. The 6 of us ran together for a couple of km's, but everyone slowly began to split up and I did everything I could to hold on for 5th. The guys in front were simply running to fast, so I'm reasonably happy with how I finished. It ended up being quite close at the end, with 2nd place being rushed to hospital at the finish as he was unconscious from heat exhaustion.

I have now made it to Aix Les Bains in France, and I'm staying with the Australian team here for the next few months. The facilities here are fantastic with a 50m pool just 1min walk away, a beautiful lake to swim in, endless hills for running and riding and a full time physio and masseur, so, no excuses. I'm looking forward to getting some training done here and learning from the best. I have some more potential races planned up here, but will keep you posted once I lock some dates in.

Hope everyone is keeping warm at home, it's sunny and beautiful here today! Happy days for me!

Au Revoir,
Mitch
